What is a Ouija board?
A Ouija board is a flat board printed with the letters of the alphabet, the numbers 0 to 9 and the words YES, NO and GOODBYE. Players rest their fingers on a pointer called the planchette and ask questions; the planchette slides across the board and spells out the answers, which, according to legend, come from spirits.
Where the name comes from
The board was first sold in the United States in 1890 and patented in 1891. According to the most famous story, the name was "spelled" by the board itself during a session, and the players were told it meant good luck. Another popular explanation is that it combines the French oui and the German ja, both meaning "yes". Neither is proven, which suits the board well.
A short history of the talking board
- 1840s–1880s: Spiritualism becomes popular in the US and Europe. People try to contact the dead with knocking tables and spelling alphabets.
- 1890–1891: The talking board is sold and patented as a parlour game, a toy for evenings with friends.
- 1920s–1960s: The board becomes a household game, sold in toy shops in huge numbers.
- 1973: Horror films give it its dark reputation, which it never lost.
- Today: Ouija boards are a Halloween classic, and online spirit boards like Whispirit let anyone play from a phone.
The parts of a Ouija board
- The alphabet, usually in two curved rows, used to spell names and words.
- The numbers 0 to 9, for ages, years and dates.
- YES and NO in the top corners.
- GOODBYE at the bottom, which ends the session.
- The planchette, a heart-shaped pointer with a small window, that "reads" the letter beneath it.
Why does the planchette move?
Scientists explain it with the ideomotor effect: small, unconscious muscle movements. When several people expect the planchette to move, they push it without noticing, and it seems to move on its own. That is exactly why the game feels so uncanny.
Is it a spirit board, a talking board or a Ouija board?
All three. "Talking board" and "spirit board" are the generic names; "Ouija" is the brand name that became the common word for the game, like a nickname everyone uses.

Frequently asked questions
What does Ouija mean?
The origin is uncertain. The legend says the board itself spelled the name and that it means "good luck"; another theory combines the French "oui" and the German "ja", both meaning "yes".
Are Ouija boards real?
There is no scientific evidence that spirits move the planchette. The movement is explained by the ideomotor effect. Most people play it as a game, for the atmosphere.
Is a spirit board the same as a Ouija board?
Yes. Spirit board and talking board are the generic names; Ouija is the best-known brand name.
